Roofing FAQ

Roofing comes in many styles, colors, and materials, including wood, asphalt, and metal.

Wood: Traditional cedar wood shingles and shakes are an attractive solution for your roof. As one of the most durable woods, cedar is wind-resistant with natural insulating properties. This means it will help keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Asphalt: Asphalt shingles are the most popular choice for roofing needs. They are durable, affordable, and come in a variety of colors. You may want to familiarize yourself with the three types of asphalt shingles:

  • 3-tab shingles
  • Dimensional or architectural shingles
  • Luxury shingles

Metal: Metal roofing is more durable and longer lasting than wood or asphalt roofing. It’s also easy to install and will save on your energy costs. From a design standpoint, metal roofing will match many architectural styles and comes in a variety of colors.

A roofing system is made up of underlayment, flashing, venting, and roofing materials.

Underlayment: This is the layer under your shingles that provides a water-resistant or waterproof barrier. It is made of asphalt-saturated felt, synthetic materials, or rubberized asphalt.

Flashing: Flashing is a thin layer of waterproof material that prevents water leaking into your home by directing rain water down the roof to the gutter system.

Venting: Roof ventilation helps airflow through a system of intake and exhaust. Proper roofing ventilation will extend the life of your roof and reduce energy costs.

We’re happy to help you estimate the cost of a new roof. The typical process involves removing the existing shingles, making repairs or adding new flashing and underlayment, and installing new shingles. Other factors include:

  • Size of your roof
  • Pitch of your roof
  • How it’s installed on your frame
  • Underlayment, flashing, venting and roofing materials
  • Layers
  • Code requirements
  • Skylights, chimneys, plumbing or other features

Labor costs are about 60% and materials 40% of the total cost. Visit a store or call us to learn more about finding the right roofing materials for your project.
